  • Each assessment has a different purpose so identify the client’s goals and determine which assessment is best aligned.
  • These assessments have been developed by NSW Government and should be given priority consideration over others that may also be freely available.
  • Use probing questions to find out how comfortable the client is with survey administration and offer appropriate guidance.

Introduction to Topic

Assessments can be a great way to elicit more understanding about a workplaces mental health maturity and can be used to identify areas of strength and areas for further development. Conducting an assessment like those on this page is usually a helpful step when identifying and managing psychosocial hazards. The assessments included on this page are:

Workplace Wellbeing Assessment

  • A 10-20 minute digital tool that measures an organisation’s capability to promote, support and manage mental health. It gives clients a confidential and detailed assessment based on a survey done by the workforce.
  • Target audience: Business owners/leaders looking to understand how well they’re providing foundations of a mentally healthy workplace and what experiences their workers are having with mental-ill health at work
  • The assessment creates a detailed report with practical actions to improve mental health in the workplace, information on how the organisation compares to others in their industry and NSW and insights into what experiences people are having with mental ill health in the workplace

Workplace Pulse Check

  • A 5minute confidential assessment of an organisation’s capability to promote, manage and support mental health at work. Results are based on one person’s answers. The client can complete the survey completely online.
  • Target audience: Business owners/leaders, especially in the early stages of focusing on workplace mental health. Workers can also use it to get their leaders on board to invest in workplace mental health.
  • Provides a summary of practical actions that can be taken to create a mentally healthier workplace.
  • This is a short assessment which can act like an initial screener to understand the maturity of workplace mental health in an organisation. Please note, it is not uncommon for small businesses to score low on this assessment, as it does assess for the presence of things like mental health policies and procedures.

People at Work:

  • Purpose: A free and validated 10-15 minute digital tool that measures an organisation’s level of risk for common psychological hazards, such as bullying, harassment and workload stressors. The measure is completed by employees in the organisation.
  • Target audience: Business owners/leaders with concerns about psychological health in their workplace due to issues like workers compensation claims, high staff turnover, or those who want to understand the specific psychosocial risks to mental health and how to address them.
  • The report provides overall as well as team level results, and additional scores for specific hazards and factors. The tool is also useful for helping leaders meet their obligations under WHS laws.
  • There are good resources on the website about how to successfully distribute the survey and understand the results
  • Please note: there needs to be a minimum of 20 responses for clients to be able to access the results

Process Considerations

  • Some coaches like to go through shorter assessments with their clients (i.e. the workplace pulse check), others use it to measure progress over time and others use it to initiate and guide conversations with clients.
  • The websites for the workplace wellbeing assessment and people at work survey include helpful resources to help clients communicate and distribute the survey to employees.
  • Triage Specialists may provide administration support to clients who are not confident with the survey logistics, this would be in addition to their allocated coaching hours.
